The REVIA project (Experimental Development of Advanced Solutions for the Second Life of Batteries) is positioned as a key initiative within the Spanish industrial ecosystem, focused on the intelligent reuse of batteries from light electric vehicles. Launched in 2025 with a 12-month duration, the project has a budget of €811,121, funded under the AEI 2025 (L4) program.

A Strategic Project for Sustainable Mobility

The main objective of REVIA is to develop innovative solutions that optimize the performance, safety, and efficiency of reused batteries, while contributing to more sustainable mobility aligned with the principles of the circular economy.

To achieve this, the project will use Millor Battery’s industrial plant as its validation environment, where the developed technologies will be tested under real operating conditions.

This initiative addresses one of the industry’s major challenges: extending battery lifespan, reducing waste, and strengthening the competitiveness of the industrial sector, particularly in the field of electric mobility.

Industrial and Technological Collaboration

REVIA brings together 9 organizations combining industrial and technological expertise: CIAC – Clúster de la Indústria d’Automoció de Catalunya, Digital Cluster of Catalonia, CEP – Spanish Plastics Centre, MAV – Advanced Materials Cluster of Catalonia, Leartiker, Thinex Rotimpres, Inèdit, CT Solutions, and Millor Battery.

This collaborative approach accelerates technology development and its transfer to the market.

Two Key Innovation Areas

The project is structured around two main lines of action:

1. New Materials for Safer and Lighter Batteries

REVIA will develop advanced polymer battery enclosures incorporating:

  • Flame-retardant properties
  • Passive thermal management
  • Printed sensors

These innovations will improve the safety, thermal stability, and efficiency of batteries throughout both their first and second life.

2. Industrial Digitalization Through a Digital Twin

The second innovation area focuses on implementing a digital twin (CT Solutions) at the Millor Battery plant, capable of:

  • Simulating production scenarios
  • Identifying production bottlenecks
  • Reducing scrap
  • Optimizing logistics processes

This will support data-driven decision-making and improve operational efficiency.

Expected Results: Efficiency, Safety, and Sustainability

The REVIA project is expected to achieve significant advances across multiple areas:

  • 30% to 50% weight reduction in battery enclosures
  • Enhanced thermal safety through advanced systems
  • Improved production efficiency by reducing non-productive time
  • Lower environmental impact through eco-design and circularity

In addition, validation in a real industrial environment will ensure that the developed solutions are scalable and market-ready.
